Used correctly, yes — and "correctly" matters. For newborns and babies under 12 months, an Emi is for supervised use only: awake tummy time, cuddles, and settling while you're present. Remove the comforter from the sleep space before you leave the room. Red Nose Australia advises a comforter may be introduced from 7 months; the AAP recommends a clear sleep space for the full first year, and that's the standard we recommend. When in doubt, follow your child health nurse's advice.

Not before 12 months, on our recommendation. Safe-sleep guidelines call for a clear cot for young babies — no soft toys, pillows or loose items. Until then, use your Emi as a supervised settling tool and remove it from the sleep space once your baby is asleep. From 12 months, many families make Emi a permanent part of the cot routine — and that's when the self-settling magic really begins.

Many parents find gentle white noise mimics the constant whoosh of the womb, helping babies settle and masking household sounds. An Emi delivers it softly, without screens or apps — pressed by you during supervised settling in the baby months, and by your toddler themselves later on.

By design. The music box offers 20-minute and 40-minute settings — long enough to settle into sleep, then quiet. We made this choice deliberately: paediatric researchers have raised concerns about continuous, all-night white noise, including a well-known study in Pediatrics that recommended playing sound machines for a short time rather than all night, and a 2024 scoping review examining how chronic overnight white noise may affect developing hearing and sleep habits. Just as importantly, we want little ones to fall asleep to gentle sound but stay asleep amongst the normal sounds of a home — so they grow into children who don't need white noise to sleep, at home or anywhere else.

2 × AAA batteries, housed in a screw-secured compartment that little fingers can't open. We deliberately chose batteries over a rechargeable music box: flat batteries have a habit of striking at the exact moment you need to settle a tired little one, and a battery swap takes two minutes — not thirty minutes on a charger while everyone waits.

Remove the music box first, then your Emi is machine washable and can be tumble dried on a soft, low-heat setting. It's built for real life — dropped in the pram, dragged through the park, cuddled through breakfast.

It's the most common advice in our reviews: one for the cot, one for the wash. A duplicate of the same character also saves you the dreaded lost-comforter night.

This is a companion your little one looks after. In-paw buttons control the play: one paw records your child's voice and repeats it back in a funny voice, the other offers a choice of lullabies. Touch the bottle to its mouth and it feeds. And the sweetest trick — nurse it and pat its head, and it yawns, gives a little snort, and its eyes slowly close as it drifts off to sleep. It's safety tested and compliant from birth (0+), but we recommend it from around 3 years — that's when the record-and-repeat games, lullaby choices and caring play really come into their own. The mini is a smaller, lighter security comforter without the music box — the same soft character in a take-anywhere size for the pram, the nappy bag, or grandma's house. The full-size musical comforter is the sleep tool; the mini is the trusty sidekick. The same supervised-use guidance applies for babies under 12 months.

Many families run both: the musical comforter lives at the cot as part of the sleep routine, and the mini travels.
