White Noise Comforter vs Sound Machine: Which Is Right for Your Little One?
Parents searching for a sleep aid usually end up choosing between two things: a plug-in sound machine, or a soft comforter with a small sound box inside. They solve the same problem in different ways. This guide sets out the differences plainly so you can pick the one that suits your family.
The short answer
- A sound machine is a speaker for the nursery. It stays in one place, runs all night, and does nothing when you leave the room.
- A white noise comforter is a soft toy with a removable sound box. It plays white noise or a lullaby for 20 or 40 minutes, then turns itself off. It goes wherever your little one goes.
Many families use both: a sound machine for overnight background noise and a comforter as the settling cue at nap time, in the pram and away from home.

When a sound machine is the better choice
If the main problem is noise coming into the room (traffic, older siblings, a busy household) and you want steady sound for the whole night, a mains-powered sound machine does that job well. It is not a toy, so there are no cot-safety considerations beyond keeping cords out of reach.
When a comforter is the better choice
If the problem is settling (the transition from awake to asleep, or getting back to sleep after a wake), a comforter works as a cue. The same soft character, the same sound, at the same point every evening, tells your little one that the day is finished. Because it travels, that cue stays the same in the pram, at daycare and on holiday, which is where sleep usually falls apart.
The timer matters here too. A 20 or 40 minute run is long enough to settle and short enough that sound is not playing all night.
Safe sleep with either option
Red Nose Australia advises keeping soft items out of the cot until 7 months. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises 12 months. Love By Emi follows the more cautious advice and recommends 12 months before a comforter goes in the cot. Before then, use it for supervised settling, the pram, the change table and your arms, and take it out of the cot once your little one is asleep. Our safe sleep page has the detail.
For any sound product, keep the volume low and the sound source away from your little one's head. White noise should sound like a soft shower in the next room, not a hairdryer beside the cot.
Love By Emi comforters
Every Love By Emi musical comforter is a named character (Delly the White Tiger, Shay the Giraffe, Ellie the Elephant, Lylah the Cow and more) with a removable sound box, a 20 or 40 minute timer, two volume levels and a strap for a dummy or the pram. They are designed in Western Australia and come with a 12-month warranty. See the full range, or the two-packs if you want one for home and one for daycare.
Common questions
Can I use a comforter instead of a sound machine overnight?
Not as a replacement for all-night sound. The comforter's timer turns it off after 20 or 40 minutes by design. For overnight background noise, use a sound machine. For settling, use the comforter.
What happens if the sound box stops working?
Every product has a 12-month warranty, and replacement sound boxes are sold in spare parts, so the comforter itself is never wasted.
What batteries does it take?
2 x AAA. They are not included, so add them to your order or pick some up locally.
